Privacy policy

Last updated: 1 July 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how Arecah, trading as Big Dog Things ("we", "us", "our"), collects, uses, discloses and protects your personal information when you visit bigdogthings.com.au or otherwise deal with us (the "Site" or "Services").

We are an Australian business and this policy is written with reference to the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). By using the Services, you agree to the collection, use and disclosure of your information as described here. If you don't agree, please don't use the Site.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes to our practices or for legal reasons. We'll post the revised policy on the Site and update the "Last updated" date above.

What personal information we collect

Information you give us directly, such as:

  • Basic contact details — name, address, phone number, email
  • Order information — billing and shipping address, payment confirmation, email, phone number
  • Account information — username, password (if you create an account)
  • Shopping information — items you view, add to cart, or add to a wishlist
  • Anything you tell us directly — for example, messages you send through our contact form or customer support

Some parts of the Site require this information to work — for example, we can't ship an order without a delivery address. You can choose not to provide certain information, but that may mean we can't provide the related feature.

Information collected automatically, via cookies and similar technologies, including:

  • Device and browser information
  • IP address and general location
  • How you browse and interact with the Site (pages viewed, links clicked, time on page)

Information from third parties, including:

  • Shopify, our e-commerce platform, which supports our website, checkout and order management
  • Our payment processor, which handles payment details (card/bank information) directly to process your order — we don't see or store your full payment details
  • Judge.me, our product review platform, if you choose to leave a review
  • Our shipping and fulfilment partners, to deliver your order

We are not responsible for the accuracy of information provided to us by third parties, or for their own privacy practices.

How we use your personal information

  • To provide our products and services — processing payments, fulfilling orders, arranging shipping, handling returns and exchanges, managing your account, and enabling you to post reviews
  • To communicate with you — order updates, responses to enquiries, and customer support
  • For marketing — with your consent, sending you promotional emails about new products, offers or content. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any marketing email
  • For security and fraud prevention — detecting and investigating suspicious or fraudulent activity
  • To improve our Site and Services — understanding how customers use the Site so we can make it better

We do not run retargeting or advertising pixels (Meta, TikTok, Google Ads, or similar), and we do not sell or share your personal information with third parties for advertising purposes.

Cookies

We use cookies to run and improve the Site — for example, to remember what's in your cart and to understand how customers use the Site. Our platform, Shopify, sets some cookies automatically to power core store functionality; details are available at shopify.com/legal/cookies.

Most browsers accept cookies by default. You can change your browser settings to block or remove cookies, but this may affect how parts of the Site work (for example, your cart may not save properly).

How we disclose personal information

We disclose personal information only where necessary, including:

  • To service providers who help us run the business — Shopify (platform hosting), our payment processor (payment handling), Judge.me (reviews), and our shipping/fulfilment partners (delivery)
  • Where you ask us to — for example, sharing your address with a courier to deliver your order
  • Where required by law — for example, responding to a legal request or protecting our legal rights
  • In connection with a business transaction, such as a sale of the business — your information would be handled consistently with this policy

We don't sell your personal information to third parties, and we don't disclose it to marketing or advertising partners.

Where your information is stored

Because we use Shopify to run our store, some of your information may be stored or processed on servers outside Australia, including in the United States. Shopify maintains its own security and privacy safeguards for this — see shopify.com/legal/privacy for details. Wherever your information is processed, we take reasonable steps to ensure it continues to be protected in line with this policy.

User-generated content

If you post a product review or other content publicly (for example, via Judge.me), that content is public and can be seen by anyone. We aren't responsible for how others use or respond to information you choose to make public.

Children's data

Our Services aren't intended for use by children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you're a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us using the details below and we'll delete it.

Security and retention

No method of storing or transmitting data is 100% secure, and we can't guarantee perfect security. We take reasonable steps to protect your information, and we recommend not sending highly sensitive information (like full payment card details) to us directly via email or contact forms.

We keep your personal information for as long as needed to provide our Services, meet legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements — for example, order records are generally kept for tax and accounting purposes.

If we experience a data breach that's likely to result in serious harm, we'll assess and respond in line with the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme, including notifying affected individuals and the OAIC where required.

Your rights

Under the Australian Privacy Principles, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Correct any information that's inaccurate, out of date or incomplete
  • Ask questions about how we've collected, used or disclosed your information
  • Complain if you think we've mishandled your personal information

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. We may need to verify your identity before actioning a request, and we'll respond within a reasonable timeframe.

You can manage your marketing preferences at any time by unsubscribing via the link in our emails. Note that we may still need to send you non-promotional communications, such as order confirmations.

Complaints

If you have a concern about how we've handled your personal information, please contact us first using the details below so we can try to resolve it directly.

If you're not satisfied with our response, you can lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC):

  • Website: oaic.gov.au
  • Phone: 1300 363 992

Third-party links

Our Site may link to other websites we don't control. We're not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites, and we'd recommend reviewing their own privacy policies before providing any information.
