Why Long Leads Are Essential for Training Large Breeds?

What I’ve Learned Training Mack with a 10m Line?

If you’ve got a big dog with a big personality, you already know that training isn’t optional—it’s essential. But when it comes to recall, boundaries, and off-lead preparation, a standard leash just doesn’t cut it.

That’s where long leads come in. Since introducing one into our training routine with Mack, my German Shepherd, I’ve seen a huge shift in his confidence, focus, and freedom.

Why Long Leads Make a Difference?

Training a large dog means balancing control with independence. A 5m, 10m, or 15m lead gives your dog room to explore while still staying safely connected to you. It’s the perfect middle ground between a short leash and going fully off-lead.

Here’s what I’ve found long lines help with:

1. Recall Training (That Actually Works) - If your dog only hears “come” in your backyard, it won’t mean much in a park full of distractions. A long lead lets you practice recall at a distance, while still having control if your dog doesn’t respond straight away.

2. Safe Exploration - Large breeds love to roam. A long line gives them the space to sniff, track, and wander without putting them (or wildlife) at risk. It’s perfect for beaches, fields, and bushwalks where off-lead isn’t an option.

3. Controlled Social Introductions - If your dog tends to rush toward other dogs or people, a long lead gives you the ability to manage the situation calmly, without creating tension from a short, tight leash.

4. Stronger Engagement - Using a long line means your dog has to choose to stay near you, rather than just being physically held close. That subtle shift builds better habits and a stronger working relationship over time.

What to Look for in a Long Lead for Large Dogs?

Not all long lines are created equal—especially for strong dogs. At Big Dog Things, I’ve designed and tested long leads specifically for large breeds like Mack.

Here’s what I recommend:

  • Lengths of 5m, 10m, or 15m depending on your training goals
  • Heavy-duty webbing that won’t burn your hands or snap under pressure
  • Reinforced stitching and a strong clip that can handle big dog energy
  • No tangle-prone extras just solid gear that works
  • Secure clip - you'll know it's importance once you've had a clip break and your dog is running free!

Mack’s favourite? The 5m and 10m lines. It gives him room to move but keeps him responsive when we train outside the backyard. The 5m is perfect for pavement walking and the 10m is perfect for parks and beaches.

Training Tip:

Use a marker word or whistle with your long lead. Call your dog back, reward, and release them again. It builds strong recall without your dog feeling like the fun ends every time they return. We use “Mack, Come!” loud and proud!
