Top 10 Activities to Bond with Your Big Dog Indoors

With the hot weather looking like it’s here to stay… here’s some ideas for you!

1. Teach New Tricks
Engage your dog’s mind by teaching them new tricks like “roll over,” “spin,” or even advanced commands. Use treats and positive reinforcement for an enjoyable learning experience. Get in touch if you would like a book recommendation.
2. Play Interactive Puzzle Games
Keep your dog mentally stimulated with puzzle toys or treat-dispensing games. These activities challenge their problem-solving skills and keep them entertained. We have a snuffle ball and puzzle toy available on www.bigdogthings.com.au if you’re interesting in buying one.
3. Hide-and-Seek
Play hide-and-seek by hiding yourself or their favorite toy/treat. Encourage them to “find it” for a rewarding game that uses their senses. We’ve done a post of Mack finding his dinner. He LOVES this game. Don’t underestimate it.
4. Tug-of-War
Use a sturdy tug toy for a fun game of tug-of-war. Remember to follow the dos and don’ts to ensure it’s safe and enjoyable for your dog. We don’t play tug indoors but if you have space then why not!
5. Obstacle Course
Set up a mini indoor obstacle course using chairs, cushions, and boxes. Guide your dog through tunnels or jumps to give them a physical and mental workout. Brilliant idea… I’m trying this one next.
6. Scent Work Games
Hide treats around the house and let your dog sniff them out. This taps into their natural scenting abilities and keeps them entertained.
7. Practice Obedience Training
Reinforce basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come” or practice leash manners indoors to strengthen your bond and improve behavior. Important and don’t underestimate the value of doing these exercises.
8. DIY Enrichment Toys
Create homemade toys, such as a towel-wrapped treat or a cardboard box with hidden snacks, to keep your dog engaged.
9. Indoor Fetch
If you have enough space, play a gentle game of fetch with a soft ball or plush toy to avoid damaging furniture.
10. Relaxing Grooming Sessions
Spend time brushing your dog, cleaning their paws, or giving them a gentle massage. This not only strengthens your bond but also helps with their overall health.
