Long lines are essential for training, recall practice, and giving your dog more freedom while keeping them safe. But not all long lines are created equal. In this article, we'll go over three key considerations when choosing a long line and compare three different types:
- Our Big Dog Things Long Line (left in the photo)
- Biothane Long Line (middle)
- Blue Striped Long Line (right)
3 Considerations When Choosing a Long Line
-
Grip & Handling
- A good long line should be easy to handle without slipping through your hands or causing burns.
- Some materials, like biothane, can become slick when wet. Others, like soft nylon, may offer more grip but can be hard on the hands if the dog pulls suddenly.
- The blue striped long line doesn't have a handle.
- If you'd like to see what a nylon long line did to my hand when Mack ran off, I can share the photo. Let's just say 3rd degree burns.
-
Durability & Strength
- Larger dog breeds need clips that will withstand the strength and power of the dog. If you have a look at the image, you'll see the clip we have selected is superior in strength than those on the other two lines.
- Big dogs need strong, well-stitched long lines that won’t fray or snap under pressure.
- Biothane is waterproof and durable but Mack has easily popped clips of that size.
-
Weight & Drag
- A long line should be sturdy but not so heavy that it drags excessively or hinders movement.
- Thicker and heavier lines can be more durable, but they can also get caught on the ground more easily.
Why the Big Dog Things Long Line Is the Best
- Designed for Large Breeds – Unlike standard long lines, ours is made specifically for big dogs, ensuring the right balance of durability and weight.
- Soft, Comfortable Handling – The material provides a secure grip without causing rope burns, making it easier on the hands.
- Superior Strength – High-quality stitching and materials prevent fraying and breakage, even with strong pullers.
- Washes Well - Our long line washes well without going hard and stiff like other brands we have tried. We use our 5 metre line every day while walking through bushland, it's often muddy so we wash ours under the tap regularly.
- Light Enough for Training – It offers the right amount of sturdiness without being too heavy, making it ideal for recall training, tracking, and general use.
Conclusion
When choosing a long line for your dog, grip, durability, and weight are key factors. While biothane and other commercial options have their benefits, the Big Dog Things long line is specifically designed for large breeds, ensuring comfort, control, and reliability.
