Mack’s Backpack Journey: How Carrying Gear Transformed Our Walks

Mack’s Backpack Journey: How Carrying Gear Transformed Our Walks

When I first started longer walks with Mack, my big, energetic German Shepherd, I realized he had so much energy that I wanted to find ways to make our walks more challenging and mentally stimulating for him, without keeping on extending the walking time. So I decided to try out a dog backpack. Not only does it give Mack a job to focus on, but it also has a ton of benefits for both him and me!

Here’s how I introduced Mack to wearing a backpack, step by step, and why I think every big dog owner should consider one:

Step 1: Let Them Get Familiar with the Backpack
When the backpack first arrived, I let Mack sniff it out and explore it on his own. He’s a curious dog, so I made sure the pack was left out in his space for a few days. During this time, I rewarded him with treats anytime he showed interest in it, reinforcing the idea that the backpack is something positive.

Step 2: Start with Short, Empty Wear Sessions
Once Mack was comfortable with the sight and smell of the pack, I gently placed it on him, empty. It was important to keep the first few sessions short—just a few minutes of walking around the house. I wanted Mack to feel the weight of the straps without overwhelming him. Plenty of treats and praise followed each session!

Step 3: Gradually Add Weight
After a few days of Mack wearing the backpack comfortably, I started adding light items—nothing heavy at first, just some of his favorite toys and maybe a small blanket. This helped him adjust to carrying something while keeping the load under 10% of his body weight, which is a good rule to follow for beginners.

Step 4: Monitor Fit and Comfort
One thing I paid extra attention to was making sure the backpack fit snugly without being too tight. I adjusted the straps so that it sat comfortably on Mack’s back and didn’t rub against his skin. It’s important to check for any signs of discomfort, especially during those first few walks with weight added.

Make sure you seek vet advice to ensure your pup is in sufficient health to carry a backpack.

Why I Love the Backpack for Mack (and Why You Will Too!)

**It Gives Him a Job**: Big dogs, like Mack, thrive on having a purpose. Carrying his own gear, whether it’s water bottles, snacks, or his toys, keeps him mentally engaged during our walks. It gives him something to focus on other than just pulling on the leash!

**Burns Extra Energy**: Mack is a high-energy dog, and sometimes even a long walk isn’t enough to wear him out. The extra weight from the backpack helps burn more calories, making our walks more effective.

**Builds Strength**: Carrying a properly loaded backpack can help strengthen your dog’s muscles, especially if they’re already active. It’s a great way to add a low-impact workout to their routine.

**Promotes Calm Behavior**: Having Mack focus on his backpack and what he’s carrying often helps him stay calmer during our walks. It’s like he knows he’s working, which keeps him more controlled and less reactive.

Overall, introducing Mack to a backpack was one of the best decisions I’ve made for our outdoor adventures. It’s a simple way to make walks more interesting and fulfilling for him, and I can tell he loves having a “job” to do. If you’ve got a big, active dog like Mack, I highly recommend trying it out! Your dog will feel proud and satisfied—and you’ll likely have a calmer, more tired pup after each outing.
