How to Use a Long Line to Train Reliable Recall?

Training recall with a big dog isn't always easy—but it’s one of the most rewarding skills you can teach.

When I started recall training with Mack, I quickly realised that I needed more than just patience I needed the right tools too.

That’s where the long line comes in.

What is a Long Line?

A long line is an extended lead, usually between 5 and 15 metres, designed to allow increased distance between you and your dog while maintaining a physical connection, ideal for controlled recall training, distance work, or gradual exposure in open environments.

Why Use a Long Line?

A long line gives your dog the freedom to move, explore, and learn—while still being safely connected to you. It's ideal for working on recall in open areas like parks, sports fields, or bushland.

But not all long lines are created equal. I learned that the hard way.

The first one I bought was made of cheap nylon, and on our first session, Mack took off. I grabbed the line—and ended up with burns across my hand.

That’s why we designed our Big Dog Long Line to be soft, strong, and safe.

My Top Tips for Recall Training with a Long Line:

  • Start in a distraction-free environment - A quiet park or open oval is perfect. Let your dog sniff and explore before calling them back.
  • Use play or high-value rewards - I don’t use food with Mack—I use tug toys and praise. Find what your dog loves and make it fun to come back to you.
  • Don’t yank the lead - The line isn’t for correction—it’s for safety. Gently guide your dog back if needed, but avoid tension unless absolutely necessary.
  • Don’t let the line drag initially - In the early days you don’t want to let the line drag, especially if your dog isn’t accustomed to being on a long line. As your dog’s recall improves, you can trail the line behind them. This simulates off-leash freedom but gives you a backup if you need to step in.
  • Keep it short and positive - Five to ten minutes of great training is better than 30 minutes of frustration. End on a high note and leave your dog wanting more.

Why It Works?

The long line gives your dog room to learn and make choices—without the danger of running off. Over time, you’ll find you need it less and less, because your dog learns that coming back to you is always a good thing.

And when you're using the right gear, recall training becomes something you can both enjoy.
